Al’ajad veut dire grands-parents en arabe.
J’ai décidé d’appeler cette série photographique en l’honneur de l’héritage tunisien de ma grand-mère.
Ça m’a tout de suite plu. Ce mot composé qui incarne la dualité de cet héritage...

J’y vois mon grand-père haïtien,
personnifié par la majucule, grand et fière.

J’y vois ma grand-mère,
“ajad”. C’est sa voix qui le dit.
J’y vois la Tunisie que je n’ai jamais connu.

Saisir l’image de mes grands-parents voulait dire les photographier chez eux, dans leur maison de banlieue parisienne. Ici même où ils se sont rencontrés. L’un après un long périple en Europe depuis la terre en feu d’Haïti, l’autre après une traversée de la méditerranée vers un pays nouveau, inconnu.
D’abord, seuls face à leur petite-fille. Puis à deux, complices et plein de tendresse malgrés les années.

Al’ajad means grandparents in Arabic. I decided to name this photographic series in honor of my grandmother’s Tunisian heritage. I liked it immediately; this compound word embodies the duality of this heritage.

I see my Haitian grandfather, personified by the capital letter, quickly followed by the “l,” discreet and perhaps a little proud.

I see my grandmother,
“ajad.” It’s her voice that says it.
I see the Tunisia I never knew.

Capturing the image of my grandparents meant photographing them at home, in their house in the Parisian suburbs. Right here where they met. One after a long journey through Europe from the burning land of Haiti, the other after crossing the Mediterranean from Tunisia. First, alone with their granddaughter. Then, just the two of them, partners in crime and full of tenderness despite the years.
